"나답게 행동하고 절대 포기하지 마세요"

[맘스커리어=안선영 미주특파원] 지난달 28일 캘리포니아 산호세 시청에서 열린 '2022 미스 인터내셔널 패션 트래블 글로벌 파이널 대회(Miss International Fashion Travel Global Final Pageant)'에서 최종 우승의 영광을 차지한 멜로디 지에(Melody Jie, 18세)씨를 실리콘밸리에 위치한 한 사찰에서 만났다.

멜로디 지에씨는 현재 생물학을 전공하며 의사의 길을 걷기 위한 공부에 열중하고 있지만 학업과 함께 케이팝 댄스를 통한 스스로의 아름다움도 가꾸는 중이다.

- 대회 이후 달라진 점이 있다면 말씀 부탁드립니다.

네, 대회 이후 확실히 달라졌습니다. 삶에 대한 자신감과 의욕이 생겼어요. 이번 대회는 앞으로 제가 더 많은 것을 할 수 있다는 것을 깨닫게 해준 좋은 경험이었습니다.

- Have there been any changes for you after the pageant?

Yes, I definitely changed after the competition. For me, more confidence and motivation for my life also gained determination. It was a good experience to learn that I could do more than I imagined.

- 키가 꽤 큰 편인데요. 원래 미인대회 참가하는 것이 꿈이었나요?

저는 어릴 적부터 미인 대회에 참가하는 것을 꿈꿔 왔습니다. 어릴 때 키즈모델을 했었는데, 사진 찍는 것이 좋아서 마냥 신났던 기억이 있어요.

- You are quite tall. Did you originally dream of participating in a beauty pageant?

Since I was two or three years old, I have dreamed of participating in beauty contests. Because I like taking pictures, modeling, and taking.

- 대회를 준비하면서 힘든 점은 없었나요?

장기 자랑으로 케이팝 댄스를 준비했는데 완벽한 안무를 선보이기 위해 밤낮없이 연습했어요. 물론 몸매 관리를 위해 식이요법과 운동을 병행했고 Q&A 심사에서 어떤 질문을 받을지 모르기 때문에 많은 지식을 습득해야 했습니다. 매일 아침 신문을 읽고 다양한 정보를 얻기 위해 많은 노력을 기울였습니다. 힘든 순간도 있었지만 값진 경험이었습니다.

- Were there any difficult moments while preparing for the competition?

I prepared K-Pop dance(Chungha-Snapping) as a talent show and practiced day and night to show perfect choreography. Of course, I did both diet and exercise to maintain my body shape, and I had to acquire a lot of knowledge because I didn’t know what questions would be asked in the Q&A screening. Every morning, I read the newspaper and made great efforts to get various information. It was a difficult moment, but it was a valuable experience.

- 대상을 받을 수 있었던 이유는 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?

부모님의 응원과 격려, 노력과 자신감이 있었기에 대상을 받을 수 있었던 것 같아요. 정말 최선을 다했고 제 노력의 결과라고 생각해요. 겸손함을 잃지 않고 품위를 지키며 타이틀에 걸맞게 늘 발전하는 모습을 보여드리겠습니다.

- What do you think was the reason you were able to win the grand prize?

I think I was able to win the grand prize because of my parents’ support, encouragement, effort, and confidence. I also did my best, which I believe is the result of my efforts, and I will not lose my humility and keep my dignity to match the title and always develop.

- 케이팝을 좋아한다고 하셨는데 한국에 방문할 계획이 있으신가요?

저는 한국을 사랑합니다. 한국 음식과 한국 문화도 좋아하고요. 한국 음악은 저에게 영감을 줍니다. 한국에 가본 적은 없지만 기회가 된다면 방문해 많은 것을 경험해 보고 싶어요. 명동·홍대 등 젊은이들이 좋아하는 거리와 한옥마을, 그리고 싸이 '강남스타일'의 배경인 강남에 들러 강남의 분위기도 만끽하고 싶어요.

- I heard you like K-pop. What about it do you like best?

I also like Korean food and Korean culture because I love Korea. Korean music always inspires me and makes me happy. I’ve never visited Korea, but if there is a Miss Fashion Travel competition in Korea, I will visit there and I want to experience a lot. I want to walk on the streets that young people in Myeong-dong and Hongdae prefer. I want to visit Hanok Village and Gangnam, which is the background of Psy’s favorite Gangnam style.

- 대회 중 기억에 남는 에피소드가 있었나요?

제 청춘의 추억을 공유하고 참가자들과 우정을 이어가기 위해 함께 틱톡도 찍고 셀카도 많이 찍었어요. 나이가 들어서 한 번씩 꺼내보면 좋을 것 같아요. 제 인생에서 가장 아름다웠던 순간이니까요.

- What are your most memorable moments during the pageant?

To share our memories of our youth and keep our friendship, we encouraged each other and wanted to keep that moment forever, so we took TikTok and took many selfies. I want to keep a good relationship after the competition. It’ll be good to take it out once in a while when you get older—my most beautiful moment.

- 학교생활 중 기억에 남는 일이 있나요?

고등학교 3학년 때 자원봉사 동아리 활동을 했던 기억이 납니다. 많은 기금을 성공적으로 모아 아프리카에 우물을 파는 일에 도움의 손길을 보탰습니다. 앞으로도 도움이 필요한 사람들을 위해 계속해서 기부할 것입니다. 다른 사람을 돕는 것은 내 삶의 중요한 부분입니다.

- Is there anything memorable about your school life?

Yes, I remember joining a volunteer club when I was a senior in high school. We have successfully raised a lot of funds and helped build wells in Africa for those in need. I will continue to make donations to help people in need. Helping others is a vital part of my life.

- 인간관계에 관한 팁이 있을까요?

저는 모두에게 친절하고 진실한 것이 가장 중요하다고 생각합니다. 역지사지라는 말처럼 처지를 바꾸어 생각해 봄으로써 다른 사람의 입장을 이해하려고 계속 노력합니다.

저는 항상 상대방의 입장에서 생각하며 관계의 갈등을 최소화하는 배려심이 깊은 사람입니다. 소통과 공감의 핵심은 그 반대편의 입장을 알아차리는 것이라고 생각합니다. 이것이 좋은 관계를 유지하는 제 인간관계 꿀팁입니다.

- Do you have any personal relationship tips?

My personal relationship tips are to be kind and truthful to everyone. Above all, I keep trying to understand others’ opposites. Among the words of the classical Mencius, there is a saying called "易地思之(yìdì sīzhī)." That means "put oneself in someone's shoes."

I’m the type of person who throws away my central thoughts, always thinks from the other person’s point of view, and is considerate, which can minimize conflict in the relationship. The key to communication and empathy is knowing the opposite. These are my tips for maintaining good relationships.

- 삶에서 가장 중요한 가치는 무엇입니까?

정직, 친절, 충성, 유머감각입니다. 또한 인생에서 가장 중요한 가치는 행복한 관계, 정직하고 존경받는 삶, 안전과 보안이라고 생각해요. 자신의 가치를 이해하는 것은 자기 인식의 근본이며 인간으로서 자신을 알아가는 것입니다.

- What are the most important values in your life?

My values are honesty, kindness, loyalty, and a great sense of humor. Also the most important values in life are having a happy relationship, an honest and respectable life, and safety and security. Understanding your own values is a fundamental part of self-awareness and getting to know yourself as a human being.

- 이루고 싶은 삶의 최종 목표는 무엇입니까?

희생과 봉사정신을 함양한 의사가 되고 싶어요. 스탠퍼드 대학을 졸업해 도전적인 사회에 변화를 만들기 위해 저의 재능을 활용할 수 있는 의사가 될 것입니다.

의사가 된 후에는 도움의 손길로 모두를 행복하게 해줄 수 있는 사람이 되고 싶어요. 의료 봉사활동을 통해 의료 사각지대에 있는 소외계층을 돕기 위해 노력하는 사람이 되는 것이 제 꿈입니다.

- What is your final goal in life that you want to accomplish?

I want to become a doctor who cultivates the spirit of sacrifice and service. My final plan is to graduate from Stanford University, and my future goal is to become a doctor who can utilize my talents to make a difference in a challenging society.

After becoming a doctor, I want to be someone who can lend a helping hand and make everyone happy. I want to become a person who strives to help the underprivileged in the medical blind spot through medical volunteer activities.

- 끝으로 미인 대회에 참가할 예정인 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있나요?

미인 대회에 참가하는 것은 단순히 뛰어난 외양을 뽐내는 것이 아니라고 말하고 싶어요. 무엇보다 경험과 깊이가 중요하며 재능과 인품이 갖추고 있다면 언제든 시도해 볼 만한 경험이라고 생각합니다.

- Do you have anything you want to tell the juniors for the next pageant?

Applying for the Beauty pageant is about more than just looking good. Experience and depth are more important than anything else. If you have talent and a good personality, it’s a worthwhile experience to try anytime. I support your great challenge and courage.
